I am a technology professor and a web developer. I was considered retarded in 1950 because I had dyslexia and myopia and teachers had no idea what a learning difference was and were not taught in their teacher education to look for students that could not see. I've learned my difference is a gift of multiple talents.
I have always known I was different and understand that thinking outside the box is what sets the ones that make it happen different from those that watch it happen or those that do not know what happened. The difference in all of us makes it very interesting indeed and I love all of it. Education is my passion because it has made all the difference in my Joy.
I struggled most of my 1-12 years in public school and was not advised to go to college. My father was WWII veteran so I did go and make very good grades. 3.0 GPA. I'm now taking a Masters in Technology in Education and will go on to apply for my Doctorate in Online education next year. My son also had dyslexia and I immediately placed him in a Montessori school, of which I would never have known existed, had I not received my degree in education. It works and is amazing to me it is not accepted as public education in the US. Sudbury School is a natural democratic highly successful school concept.
My grandson has dyslexia and struggles with our special education system in public school. As far as gifts of dyslexia, my son is a "horse whisper"; can ride a wild mustang in 6 hours of gentle work, can build anything, house, car, tractor, lawnmower, fence, (with all of the parts)engineering, electrical, plumbing, architectural, is an artist and has owned many construction companies.
I am an artist, seamstress, gardener, love animals, flowers, interior design, cooking, vocalist, pianist, foster parent, musician, and family services director at my church. My grandson is only 11 but already we can see he is gifted as well. I believe Joy is my mission and I hope to pass it on to all of my students to learn to be themselves and please themselves first and let the rest of the world follow their lead. If I do not love something I will not do it. My philosophy is to “Be the change you wish to see,” as Gandhi once said.
Dyslexia never leaves you, if caught off guard; you are always struggling to remember your own phone number. There are many forms of the misunderstood way of retrieving learned information. Some have a number problem; others have a memory, or a spelling issue. Studies have shown if we use multimedia to teach reading, writing and typing all at one time beginning with four year olds, it lessens the difficulties of dyslexia. Check out Read, Write, & Type! On the internet.
