In 1992 after receiving my degree on Education at the University of Barcelona, I began to work in the Moroccan immigrant areas of Barcelona. In 1996, I arrived in California and began to work as a teacher in South Los Angeles. From 2002 to 2007, I created literacy circles to empower first generation Latino students and families who live in the Los Angeles inner city. The fruit of this labor was being recognized with The Peter Lincoln Spencer Award, The Helen R. Powell Dissertation Award, and The Aubrey A. Douglass and Malcolm P. Douglass Fellowship Award. My research is focused on literacy programs that utilized the funds of knowledge of communities as a force that generates equity as well as facilitates their members to access mainstream culture.

communities are the backbone or "force"as you have put it for learning. The opportunities are so much greater in the community to foster growth and learning. Using our communities as springboards to promote the growth and upward mobility of a communitiy lifts not only the community but all of its members as well. When we tap into the wealth of knowledge in our respective communities we reap the benefits of generations of experience and knowledge. When communities grow so do its members.

I finally made it into the web site! Sorry it took so long. Anyhow I look forward to becoming more familiar with this site and continue communication through this venue.

I have been studying the glossary and I am looking forward to some practice questions.

On another note, I must mention that I might be late to class tonight because I have training after school from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. It is training on an Accelerated Reading and Math program on the computer that I need to set-up for my students. I doubt that I
