Grew up in South Carolina, spent most of adult life in Arizona and Colorado, with 3 years in Ohio and 3 years in New Zealand. Several trips to Europe and Soviet Union/Russia. Married to professor of philosophy, 2 children, 4 grandchildren. MA in French. Have worked for pay and as volunteer in areas of social justice: peace movement; anti-hunger movement; political organizing; community building; now health care reform, particularly single payer financing system. Have served on national boards in some of these areas. Active in Democratic Party, though small d Democrat. Very active in campaigns of George McGovern and Jimmy Carter. Now work more for local candidates, though supported Obama. Active in local Mennonite church.
