My name is Niels Korthals Altes, 35 years old and living in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. After having worked as a marketeer for Unilever for 7 years I founded GreenSeat (http://www.greenseat.com) in 2005. In 2007 GreenSeat merged with Climate Neutral Group (http://www.climateneutralgroup.com). where I am now one of the directors. At Climate Neutral Group we help individuals and organisations get insight into their carbon footprint and help them reduce this to zero. This is done by energy saving and offsetting what cannot be reduced through carbon reduction projects elsewhere. When I am not working I like to tour on my bicycle or fly my parapent. No engines involved. This is probably not a coincidence. I firmly believe that we can tackle the climate problem quickly if we have the will to do so. If we put the same effort into this problem as the war on terrorism or selling Big Macs and Coca Cola we can really make a change. We just have to want it more....

Bijzonder transport

Ook in Nederland moeten we eraan geloven, de vrachtwagenchauffeurs gaan protesteren tegen de hoge dieselprijzen. Een combinatie van de hoge olieprijs en accijnsverhoging (ivm vergroenen van het fiscale stelsel) wordt niet langer geaccepteerd door de branche. En dus staan we straks met de auto vast in de protestfile omdat de bus ook al niet meer rijdt.

De transporteurs protesteren omdat de olie duur is. Met 140 Euro per vat een record. Maar is dat de schuld van de Nederlandse overheid? Waarom niet gewoon de prijzen voor transport verhogen? Bijvoorbeeld door een brandstoftoeslag in rekening te brengen aan klanten zoals gebruikelijk is in de luchtvaartindustrie?   Read more...

Je gaat het pas zien als je het door hebt

Na de Wuppen en de Smurfen hebben we nu de Welpies. 25.000.000 stuks sterk. Als je ze achter elkaar zet vormen ze een rij van hier tot China. Daar komen ze waarschijnlijk ook vandaan. De vraag is echter waar ze naartoe gaan. Waar zijn alle wuppen gebleven? Er slingeren er vast nog weleen paar rond in een keukenla of in de speelgoeddoos van de kinderen maar de rest? Tja, in de prullenbak vermoedelijk. Op de stortplaats, in de verbrandingsoven. De Welpies gaan daar straks achteraan.

Op de website van Ahold zien we mooie teksten over duurzaamheid, een bijdrage leveren aan het milieu, etc, etc maar dit lijkt daar toch niet echt mee overeen te komen. Wat is het nut van een verpakkingsconvenant (om de hoeveelheid verpakkingen te reduceren) als je in een paar weken het land overspoelt met vijfentwintig miljoen Welpies?   Read more...
