I write a Left-leaning political blog called The Goddess. I write about many things including politics, religion and pop culture from a Pagan perspective. I'm a 3rd degree High Priestess of Dianic Wicce, and I spend a great deal of time answering questions about the return of the Great Mother Goddess, about my Monotheastic faith (yes, that's the correct spelling) and the concept of Matriarchy. Don't let that last one scare you off - it's not what most people think it is. I'm disabled, have a book in the works and I live on a mountain in a very remote region of Appalachia. I lived on the East Coast of the US for about 15 years, and most of my friends are still there, so I'm a little homesick, even though my family has lived on this mountain for over 100 years, and in this area since way before Columbus. I'm Native American (Cherokee) and Melungeon, with a bit of Irish. Visit my blog, The-Goddess

Gaia as Goddess -

I think that it's very important for humans to realize that the Earth, or Gaia, is a living female body that produced life within Her parthenogenically. Everything that lives on this planet ultimately comes from that first cell that became life in Her womb, the ocean. I call this Goddess Consciousness, but even if you don't want to take it to the level of religion, I want people to understand the literal truth of Her living body. She has Her own cycles, She can be harmed by our being out of harmony with Her and nothing on this planet is not intimately connected to everything else. She lives. She's conscious in a real way, and we can get in touch with Her as easily as just standing on the ground and feeling our connection to and through Her.

Even if it is not literally true, and I think it is, the prudent thing to do is act as if it is true. If you see the ocean as the womb of all iife, suddenly the idea of massive piles of garbage floating there or dumping toxic chemicals into it - into Her - becomes unbearable, and these things should be. We don't have to continue savaging the environment, and knowing She lives makes us much less likely to allow these things to go on.

This is not a question of whether Gaia will continue - She was here long before us and will remain long after. She is a self-healing entity and Her immune system will only tolerate so much before it has to slough off the offending agent within Her. That
