I'm a 3 time wife and 3 time mother who has worked for 33 years as a registered nurse. Living naturally, healthfully, and at one with GUS (Great-Universal-Spirit) and Mother Earth are very important to me. For years, after doing traditional nursing, I taught health promotion classes and programs. As hospitals cut these programs, I found myself returning to traditional nursing, where many days I find the work frustrating as we have denied the circle of life in our quest for immortality - so afraid of dying. I edit articles for nursing journals, and I am looking for a way to be more involved in making our world more peaceful and happy for all living, all creation, all of earth.

Grand's Choice

What grandparent would choose to spend all of the family money, to live for another 3 months, or a year, then knowing that his grandchild wouldn't have any money for college. Or for the child's own health? If that choice were put to them, most grandparents would say- give the money to the kids.

Yet in reality - every day in hospitals, the decision is made to spend huge amounts of money, keeping the "grands" alive with expensive procedures, medicines, and what our country has come to call "health care." If we look at that amount of money spent, and consider what else could be done with it - I think we would be ashamed.

In ancient cultures that lived closely to nature, when the elders couldn't "chew the leather," they optionally went out to sit on the ice, or under a tree or went up a mountain to die.

We have come so far from this balance that we consider elder persons who are ready to die, depressed, so we give them more drugs. It is time to stop heroic measures with our elders and allow people to die naturally. Of course - I believe in comfort measures. Pain killers are cheap, and no one should die drowning in their own lung fluids. Howerver, we need to wake up to this ethical delemma, and stop.

No grandparent in their right mind would say - yes spend $300,000 to keep me alive for one more year. As a grandparent, I realize this will send 6 children to college in style. It will also put excellent food onto the plates of a lot of children. Our health care dollars should go to children FIRST.
