I'm an optimistic, spiritual cynic. In other words, I know that we can achieve a better world in which we live. We can make and shape the world to be the way we want it to be. But I also realize that "we" are not monolithic and that we can't all agree on the ultimate goal much less the means of getting there. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't at least try to make things better, to understand each other more, and to listen.
Perhaps with more listening, less talking, more understanding, less seeking to be understood, (St. Francis' prayer), we may find that the better world we seek is closer than we first thought.
I throw in the word cynic because I know how good people can be, but I too often see how bad we can be. As a lawyer, I'm constantly fighting to make a corporation or another person do the right thing. But I'll never lose hope for that better world. And I strive to practice law (http://www.bherringtonlaw.com) consistently with these principles.
I'm also a firm believer in the utility of humor to bring diverse people together.
