I am a 56 yr. old micro philanthropist .
I founded a nonprofit org., HYBASIA INC which has a 501c3 nonpro
fit status.
My day job is Labor and Delivery Nurse at U.T.M.B. in Galveston,TX.
I love helping people. (especially the poor who don't have a voice)
My nonprofit 's focus is in Africa. HYBASIA : Helping Your Brothers and Sisters in Africa.
My first project was to establish a hygiene program in Issele-Uku, Nigeria.
My son, Onyema, my niece Isioma and I taught hand washing with soap and water at the Rev. Martin Primary school.
We gave out toothbrushes and tooth paste that was partially donated by my friends from my unit at work and by myself.
We researched what the needs were at the mixed secondary school.
They had no poor toilet facilities and no hand washing area. In fact they had a latrine .(a hole in a cement floor. It was poorly lit.
A small broom was there to brush away the excesses).
Schools are great places to establish good hygiene practices.
Hand washing with soap and water can prevent most diarrheal diseases.
My church helped me do my first fundraiser a few month ago. It was a good start for the hygiene program.
I will travel to Issele-Uku, Nigeria in August '09 to deliver the funds.
I decided to start my nonprofit because their needs were not addressed by any large org. Not on any "Projects list".
I will be going to Cape Coast, Ghana where I am affiliated with HYBASIA after school program this August '09 also.
I felt that I could help change the world, one village at a time.
My interest are photography, painting, ceramics and stained glass making.
I also enjoy reading, especially Ode magazine. (it has many articles of interest to me.)
