The Global Corner helps children understand the world
Based in Pensacola, Florida, The Global Corner (www.theglobalcorner.org) provides age-appropriate activities for elementary school children to help them understand the arts, language, literature, customs, culture and food of other countries. Each school year, they focus on bringing one country to life. In 2009-2010, the focus country is Egypt. Our teachers and volunteers keep the students involved with hands-on activities that are designed not only to help them understand the world around them, but also help them learn.
Last week The Global Corner International Learning Center held a three day "trip" to Egypt. The event was open to all children who would attend elementary school this coming fall. The second day of activities was centered around Contemporary Egypt. Students reviewed previous information on the location of Egypt and the eco systems within the country. Students responded to questions during the review by answering yes in Arabic. A presentation by The Global Corner's Director, Lee Little of modern day Cairo and other cities along the Nile were also explored. Students also learned other words in Arabic which they used throughout the day including how to say: hello teacher, thank you and good bye.
Students then explored Egypt with teacher Maria Nelson. They learned how Cairo was located on the same latitude line as Pensacola on a beach ball globe of the world. A book entitled, Ahmed has a secret was then read to the children. Children actively participated during the reading of the book by being asked what sights and sounds they thought they could experience in both the old and new sections of the market places in Egypt just like Ahmed.
After the book, students created postcards for family and friends. They then drew colored camels, deserts, and whatever they imagined would be seen while visiting Egypt. The program then preceded to the last activity of the day which covered Ancient and Modern Dance and Music with teacher Jodie Miller. Students began the music and dance segment by listening to Egyptian children sing in English to Arabic instruments. The students were not accustomed to hearing most of the instruments, but there were some familiar sounds like the drums. Ms. Miller also showed students different pictures of instruments such as the Ancient Egyptian Harp. Sagats also known as Zills or finger symbols were then passed around for both students and teachers to play.
Overall the orientation was a great way for students to get a preview of what will be taught to them in their classrooms this fall. It also gave the teacher's an opportunity to learn what interests the students within their curriculum.
