The Root of Educare: Coyote Mentoring

“..education is failing its objective based on the Latin root of the word: educare, to nourish. [Those teaching] should challenge the natural creativity of children, inviting them to follow their inborn curiosity rather than pushing them through textbooks.” -Jurriaan Kamp, Ode magazine, October 2008

An education system with something missing. What is missing? We wonder We ponder and question, hypothesize and experiment; Congregating to share insight and new theory.

I posit an alternative: Welcome to Coyote Mentoring A very old system, Found in indigenous cultures on multiple continents. Field-tested and refined through countless generations.

At its heart, A regularly visited spot in Nature And a long-term relationship Between multiple Mentors And a person being mentored.

The Mentors facilitate The cultivation of a bond Between this person and Nature. And, Over time, This person’s inner curiosity Is fed, like a fire, with questions, Until their life embodies the learning process; And they pursue their passion With zeal and hope.

Wouldn’t it brighten our horizons to see more of this today?

The method was passed By oral means For many a year.

Word-of-mouth gave me hints at technique. “Always answer a question with a question.” And now, because of a new book, Coyote’s Guide to Connecting with Nature, The iceburg is revealed.

Fusing the systems of Modern and Indigenous is a work underway. And I wonder, offhand, At parallels between this effort And those who took the first steps To fuse practices of the East and West.

Regardless,

In the spirit of bringing the old ways that have always worked Into a new light, May we find the preservation of the world By learning to read the Book of Nature.

Coyote’s Guide to Connecting with Nature underwent a limited initial release through

**And a correction, Educate > Educare which is related to Educere (Ex + Ducere) = To lead out or Lead out, which is what Coyote Mentoring does.
