Climate Week events and environmental activists call for an agreement in Copenhagen
In anticipation of the UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Copenhagen December 7-18, which aims to include all the countries in the world in signing a global agreement to help slow climate change by restricting, and eventually reducing, greenhouse gas emissions when the first period of the Kyoto Protocol ends in 2012, people all over the world are making their voices heard regarding climate change.
This week, September 21-25, 2009, is Global Climate Week, coinciding with the United Nations Secretary-General's High Level Summit on Climate Change. The UN has started a worldwide campaign on climate change called Seal the Deal! which aims to gather support for a global agreement to be signed in Copenhagen in December.
New York City has devoted the entire week to climate change as well, with hundreds of leaders from around the world gathering in NYC the week of September 20, 2009 to meet for talks on climate change. The weeklong event, called Climate Week NY°C, will serve as a sounding board, allowing citizens, business leaders and government officials to encourage global leaders to sign an agreement in Copenhagen.
Greenpeace activists are sending messages to world leaders leading up to the UN Climate Change Conference by hanging massive banners with environmental warnings from locations such as Mount Rushmore and most recently a bridge in Pittsburgh intended to greet G20 leaders arriving for the summit.
