In 1995, Tariq Khamisa was delivering pizzas to help pay his expenses at the University of San Diego in California when he was shot and killed by Tony Hicks, a 14-year-old gang member. Hicks was sentenced to 25 years to life. But to Azim Khamisa, imprisonment of the boy who murdered his 20-year-old son didn’t feel like justice. “Almost as soon as it happened, I realized there were two victims on each side of that gun,” says Khamisa. “The real culprit was not this young boy, but society. When you look at Tony’s life, you can see the downward spiral happen from the beginning.” So Khamisa forgave Hicks and teamed up with the boy’s grandfather, ples felix (right) to start the Tariq Khamisa Foundation (TKF), which teaches young people about the pain that comes with gang violence.

So far, TKF has reached millions of students in thousands of schools across the U.S., spreading a message of hope, forgiveness and personal responsibility. Hicks, now 26, has been working with TKF from his prison cell by appearing in videos to warn high school kids about the dangers of gang violence. “In San Diego, there’s been a substantial decrease in gang violence where we’re active,” says Khamisa, adding that they’ve received more than 100,000 letters from students touched by their work. Khamisa is now fighting for Hicks’ early release: “Tony would be a lot more useful to society working for the foundation than rotting in a prison cell. This foundation is a result of forgiveness. It’s better than revenge.”

Mr. Khamisa is a true Agent of Peace and Agent of Change. It is when more and more people understand that good can only grow out of forgiveness that we will find Peace…in our hearts and in our worlds. We also need to follow Mr. Khamisa lead regarding Tony Hicks, we have created a punishment system that has proven itself successful not in its intended role in rehabilitant offenders, but as a lucrative business for both the private sector as well as municipalities. We need a paradigm shift in our thinking when it comes to those who have broken our laws, what is our goal…it is to “make them pay…make them suffer” for what they have done, or is it to help them to become contributing members of society, as Mr Khamisa has done with the boy who murdered his son. There is a bill in the House of Representatives to establish a United States Department of Peace and a Secretary of Peace. It presently has 70 co-sponsors. What the Department of Peace will do is study, teach and implement the skills of peace in our society and the world. The Tariq Khamisa Foundation exemplifies the Department of Peace. Its work is transformative.

For more information on the effort to establish a Department of Peace, contact The Peace Alliance.
