The Readers Blog is a group blog, a collection of provocative, passionate people who represent a broad geographical, professional, personal and vocational range. New bloggers from other places and other points of view will join the conversation from time to time. Here, we invite them all to share their perspectives and opinions on the issues that matter to them most. And we invite you to respond. Let the dialogue begin!

DoPeace: Empowering civic activism toward a culture of peace

The simplicity of the words is what grabbed me. Do peace. That’s all. Straightforward. Simple. Clear. Unmistakable. Whatever else you’re doing, do peace.

I received an email about this just before Labor Day. Here’s what it really means:

Do Peace is the social networking site created by The Peace Alliance, that organization which works to create a Department of Peace in the United States Government.

Here’s a bit from their website:

“The DoPeace site is a community of, by and for volunteers with The Peace Alliance, the Student Peace Alliance and the Campaign for a U.S. Department of Peace. We come together to celebrate, support and foster effective and FUN citizen-based peace activism.

“Feel free to explore your MyPeace page, join a group for your State and Congressional district, make friends with fellow peace activists, sign up for an event, upload event photos or videos, start or participate in a discussion, or write your own blog! There are many ways to participate and become part of this peace-building community! The Do Peace Overview video will help you get started. You can also check out the Community Norms, Tips and FAQ.”

I have a MyPeace page on this site. One of the downsides to peace work is that one can get to feeling pretty isolated in it, like there is no one supporting our efforts, like no one cares that we’re even making an effort. A site like this one restores my energy and seeds hope within me.

There are lots of peace workers on planet Earth, and for all I know, on other planets as well. We are all using different methods to get to the same goal. Peace for everyone, no exceptions.

As you know, if you’ve followed my peace work in Ode, I am an inner peace activist. I believe that unless we have inner peace, then outer peace is too far a leap.

Today is my 52nd birthday, and I am awed, amazed and delighted at our world. We’re getting there—to greening, to taking care of one another, to taking care of earth, and to peace. One person, one peace, at a time.

Won’t you join me on Do Peace?
