Peace is a better friend

Tama J. Kieves, writing in the September 2007 Science of Mind magazine, completes her quote, “Peace is a better friend than excitement.”

As a younger person than I currently am, I lived for excitement. Life was either absolutely stupendous or absolutely the pits. In a way, I lived in fear of the grays. It was black or white for me all the way. The seasoning of time has grown different values in me, and I’m grateful for it.

At fifty, I’d much rather have a friend in peace than in excitement. Don’t misunderstand, I can do enthusiasm with the best of them, but enthusiasm lasts a flicker and peace as a friend is a great sustainer. One of the newest values in business has become sustainability.

What sustains me more than peace? Nothing. No thing at all but peace. I find that friends who bring me peace enhance my life experience. Using peace as a primary value, the one against which I measure all choices, is a sustainable practice for me. I ask these sorts of questions:

Does this choice foster peace?
Is the peace personal? Is it universal? Somewhere in between?
Does this choice create peace for the environment?
For the government? For the people on my street?

Peace is a better friend than excitement because peace is a sustainable value. Try using it as your plumbline for a week and see what happens in your life.
