Rupa & the April Fishes: Immigration is a human issue, not just a political one

Talking to the cemetary groundskeeper in el centro, It hit home just how over-politicized immigration has become. It is what politicians and pundits call a "wedge issue".

At one point he said "they're not bad people. They just want to work." and then "no offense, but you don't see white people in the fields picking crops. They don't want those jobs."

It's true. And looking back at this country's relatively brief history, you see the same story over and over again. Protestants, Irish, Italians, and so forth. Everybody came from somewhere in search of a better life.

People keep saying this: immigration is a human issue, not just a political one. Human beings are risking death, arrest, and countless dangers just to work. My parents did the same thing. Your grandparents or great grandparents did the same thing.

So why does it need to be so dangerous? Why can't America "protect it's borders" and care about human beings at the same time?

Peace, Sufa
