Kathleen Taylor, M.D.
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in the world today, and in poor countries it is the number one cancer killer of women. Over 290,000 women die of it every year, yet it is completely preventable. Upon her retirement from her OB/Gyn practice, Dr. Kay Taylor began PINCC (Prevention International: No Cervical Cancer) in 2005 to provide one-visit cervical cancer prevention treatment to women without access to care in developing countries.
With volunteer doctors, nurses, medical students and others she travels to remote areas of Africa, Central America and now India to provide education, diagnosis and treatment of pre-cancer of the cervix, and to teach these techniques to doctors and nurses, so they can continue to provide care for their communities. PINCC uses a proven single-visit protocol, developed by the U. N. World Health Organization's Alliance for Cervical Cancer Prevention to screen, diagnose and treat precancerous lesions of the cervix with a success rate of over 90%. All necessary equipment is carried in 3 suitcases, and they need only electricity from a generator to provide full treatment.
The cost of this treatment for each woman, many of who travel on foot for a day or more to reach Kay and her staff, is less than $15. Additional funds raised by PINCC are used to purchase equipment and supplies that are then donated to each of these remote clinics once the staff have been trained by Kay to continue this work.
