Frank Stewart

Frank Stewart is a founding editor of the international literary journal MANOA. Published twice a year since 1989, the magazine is now one of the most highly regarded literary journals in the U.S. and has done groundbreaking work in the field of publishing.

For example, in 2004 it produced In the Shadow of Angkor in 2004, described at the journal's website as follows: "Published twenty-five years after the defeat of the Khmer Rouge regime, In the Shadow of Angkor captures the resurgence of the Cambodian arts community and its efforts to restore a rich literary heritage. In many of the works, the artists defy the decimation of their brothers and sisters by the Khmer Rouge, as well as the attempt to erase Cambodia's memory of its history. The range of expression is impressive: the volume includes poetry, short story, film, rap lyrics, and essays, plus interviews with authors and a portfolio of photographs of Cambodia."

MANOA has also published indigenous writing from French Polynesia and a collection of Korean and Korean American writing, which came out during the centennial celebration of Korean immigration to the U.S. The summer 2007 issue is described at the journal's site as follows: "Crossing Over comprises stories from three South Asian countries - India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh - with a combined population of over two billion. The works here focus on the cataclysmic experiences of Partition in 1947 and its aftermath, including the Bangladesh War of Independence in 1971.

Many of these works have not been readily accessible to American and other English-speaking readers; they serve as a mere glimpse at a rich and vast body of literature being produced in many languages of the Subcontinent." With the publication of its winter 2008 issue, Enduring War: Stories of What We Have Learned, the journal will celebrate its twentieth anniversary.
